On Saturday 11th March a group of SMC members joined other users of Creation Climbing Centre and local families in a charity climb to raise money for a Forest School for St Martin de Porres primary school. We also raised a bit for Mountain Rescue.
The plan was to raise £500 by climbing the height of Everest at the wall. The event organiser, Kate Lucre, had calculated that we needed to do 533 routes. That’s a lot of routes but without air fares, oxygen bottles or snow and ice, quite a comfortable way to get ‘up Everest’.
We kicked off at 10am and by 4pm it was mission completed. SMC members Phil, Richard, Paul, Sue, Ian and Dave P all got stuck in. Between the six of us we added over 140 routes to the tally, pretty good going and an excellent training session.
And the sum raised? At the time of writing it was up to £740. The school and local families are really excited at the amount raised bringing the Forrest School closer to being a reality for these inner-city kids. And, £75 will be finding its way up to the Edale Mountain Rescue team.
Not a bad haul for a day’s training at the wall.
