A whole year of celebratory events for SMC kicked off in style on Friday 2nd February with seventy nine members, past and present, attending our 60th Birthday Bash at Old Edwardian’s Club, Solihull. The club, then known as the Solihull YHA Group, held its very first committee meeting, back in the day, on 2nd February 1958. This party was a perfect start to a whole range of planned adventures and social events to celebrate our Diamond Jubilee.
It was a brilliant night! There was plenty of pizza to eat and an ideal opportunity for everyone to have a good catch up. One of the club’s founding members, Mick Hall, talked about the building of the SMC’s club hut Bryn Gollau. Current members could only marvel at the tenacity and hard work of all the team who renovated the hut. It was quite a building project and many of the attendees reminisced about their endeavours.
The party goers were delighted to hear from the first President and founder of the club, Alec Tapper. Sadly Alec was not able to make it to the party but sent the following message:
‘Congratulations to all the current members who are continuing the history of our club. I hope all goes brilliantly tonight ‘
The celebrations were marked by an extra special 60th Birthday cake, made by club member Helen Every. It was a magnificent affair. Not only was there a choice of lemon sponge, fruit cake or chocolate cake, all of which were completely delicious, but Helen had created our lovely hut complete with sheep, in icing! Helen, we think the British Bake Off beckons!
Thanks goes to all the SMC team who helped in the organisation of this event and an even bigger thank you to everyone who attended the party and helped kick start a year of great Diamond Jubilee events for the Club.
